Empowering Agriculture: BCFA Secures CCF Grant to Expand “Feather to Fork” Program

Charitable Contributions Fund
In May 2024, Stefanie Manbeck—Board Member of the Botetourt County Fair Association (BCFA) and Livestock Chair of the Botetourt County Fair—took a proactive step to strengthen local agricultural education. She applied for a Charitable Contributions Fund (CCF) grant to support the “Feather to Fork” program by funding essential poultry cages. Recognizing the need for dedicated equipment, the BCFA aimed to reduce reliance on external resources and ensure the program’s long-term sustainability.
As a result of Stefanie’s initiative, the BCFA was awarded a $2,000 grant from Farm Credit of the Virginias, which enabled the purchase of 28 poultry cages. This investment not only supports the program’s growth but also reinforces the BCFA’s commitment to providing a seamless, community-driven experience for participants and fairgoers alike.

About “Feather to Fork”
Launched in 2024, “Feather to Fork” is an innovative educational program designed to give participants hands-on experience raising poultry. Participants can choose to raise either 10 or 25 laying hens of various breeds, nurturing them from chicks to pullets before showcasing and auctioning them at the Botetourt County Fair. For those interested in meat production, the program also offers a broiler project, where participants raise broilers and take part in the harvesting process.
This initiative not only cultivates agricultural skills and responsibility but also deepens the community’s connection to local food systems. The BCFA is excited about the program’s continued development and its potential to inspire future generations of agricultural leaders.
