Farm Credit Grant Supports Grain Bin Safety Training in Franklin County

Charitable Contributions Fund
Grain bin entrapments are among the most dangerous and often fatal accidents in agriculture. In 2022 alone, the U.S. recorded 42 grain entrapment incidents—a staggering 44.8% increase from the previous year. Recognizing the urgent need for prevention and preparedness, Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) in Franklin County launched a powerful initiative to protect lives and strengthen community resilience, for which they received a Charitable Contributions Fund grant from Farm Credit of the Virginias (FCV).
A Critical Need for Safety
As grain farming plays a major role in Franklin County’s agricultural economy, the risk of grain bin accidents is ever-present. Despite this, many farmers and first responders lack access to specialized training in grain bin rescue operations. The 2024 Grain Bin Entrapment Program was designed to fill this gap, arming both emergency personnel and the farming community with life-saving knowledge and skills.

The program was made possible through over $26,000 in funding, including FCV’s Charitable Contributions Fund grant and a grant from the Southeast Center for Health and Injury Prevention, in addition to local sponsors.
A Community-Wide Response
The intensive Grain Bin Entrapment Program was held November 8-9, 2024, with a special community event on November 7, 2024.
- November 7: A community education day for over 65 farmers, family members and local residents focused on prevention, awareness and best practices related to grain bin safety.
- November 8-9: A two-day intensive training for 20 paid and volunteer Fire and Rescue personnel from Franklin, Roanoke, Bedford and Pittsylvania Counties. Participants received hands-on instruction in grain bin rescue techniques, emergency response procedures, and proper equipment use.
Measurable Impact
The results of the program speak volumes:
- 85% of first responders reported increased confidence in handling grain bin emergencies.
- 90% of all participants said their understanding of grain bin safety and rescue operations improved.
- Community members left with a deeper awareness of accident prevention and a renewed commitment to safety on the farm.

One farmer shared, "This program is one of the best held in the county. [VCE]’s dedication to keeping our families safe is unmatched. Not only is this program educating adults, but the commitment to making it accessible to families shows that, regardless of age, we all have a role in learning how to save lives."
Building a Safer Agricultural Future
By bringing together farmers, families and first responders, the Grain Bin Entrapment Program has created a ripple effect of safety and preparedness across Franklin County and the surrounding area. With support from organizations like Farm Credit of the Virginias, VCE is helping to ensure that Virginia’s farms remain not only productive, but safe for everyone who works and lives on them.
