Growing Futures: WVU Parkersburg Agriculture Program Thrives with ACE Grant Support

Charitable Contributions Fund
WVU Parkersburg’s Agriculture Program took a major leap forward during the 2024-2025 academic year, thanks in part to a $10,000 Agricultural Career Enhancement (ACE) grant from Farm Credit of the Virginias. The funding was used to provide student stipends, enabling more than a dozen students to gain hands-on experience at The Riverhawk Farm, an on-campus hub for agricultural learning and innovation.
Empowering Students Through Hands-On Learning
The stipends allowed students to focus on agricultural training without the need for outside employment. Their contributions included:
- On-Farm Operations: Planting, harvesting, soil testing, pest management and implementing sustainable practices.
- Community Engagement: Selling produce at local farmers markets, educating customers and collaborating with local farms.
- Student-Led Projects: Organizing workshops, conducting research and improving farm operations.
These experiences helped students build practical skills, explore agricultural careers and connect with the local food economy.

Real Impact, Real Stories
Student testimonials underscored the value of the ACE grant. Many shared that without the financial support provided by the ACE grant, they wouldn’t have been able to participate in these opportunities due to work obligations. The chance to work on The Riverhawk Farm gave them confidence, career clarity and meaningful professional connections.
Looking Ahead
WVU Parkersburg plans to expand its internship program, create leadership roles for students and integrate technology, such as soil sensors and data tools. The program aims to deepen ties with local farms and secure additional funding to ensure continued access for students from all backgrounds.
A Model for Agricultural Education
The ACE Grant has proven to be a transformative investment—not just in students, but in the future of agriculture in the region. By removing financial barriers and fostering immersive learning, WVU Parkersburg is cultivating a new generation of agricultural leaders.
