Project GROWS Expands Fresh Food Access with Farm Credit’s Support

Charitable Contributions Fund
In 2024, Project GROWS successfully advanced its mission of growing a healthy community by increasing fresh food access in rural areas and investing in the future of agriculture through youth education—thanks in part to generous support from the Farm Credit of the Virginias Charitable Contributions Fund grant program. Through its Farm-to-Food Pantry Initiative, Project GROWS not only exceeded its goals but also deepened its impact across rural Augusta County, Va.
Feeding Families, Strengthening Communities
With a goal of producing 17,000 pounds of fresh produce, Project GROWS surpassed expectations by harvesting over 19,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables during the growing season. Of that, 1,900 pounds were donated, providing more than 215,000 servings of nutritious food to over 1,500 individuals in need. In 2024, Project GROWS also built a strong partnership with Central United Methodist Church, which played a vital role in distributing the fresh produce to families across the region.
Investing in the Future of Agriculture
Beyond food access, the initiative also focused on cultivating the next generation of agricultural leaders. Through a paid summer employment program, 10 local youth received intensive training in sustainable farming, food systems and community service. These young participants gained hands-on experience that not only built practical skills but also instilled a deep sense of purpose and leadership.
A Direct Contribution to Rural Well-Being
The Farm-to-Food Pantry Initiative directly supported the Charitable Contribution Fund’s mission of enhancing the quality of life in our rural communities and investing in the future of agriculture. By increasing access to fresh, locally grown food and advancing youth agricultural education, Project GROWS was able to achieve the following:
• Strengthen local food systems
• Improve nutrition for food-insecure families
• Foster leadership and agricultural career skills among youth
Creating a Lasting Impact
Grant funds were used to support the costs of fresh food donations, ensuring that high-quality produce reached those who needed it most. This investment not only helped Project GROWS exceed its impact goals but also reinforced the importance of community-driven solutions to food insecurity. With generous support from community partners such as Farm Credit of the Virginias, Project GROWS is building a more resilient, equitable and healthy food system—one harvest, one youth leader and one family at a time.
