What Does SMART Stand For?
SMART is an acronym that helps you create goals that are:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Relevant
- Time-Bound
By evaluating your goal through each of these five criteria, you can develop a clearer path to success and improve your chances of achieving meaningful results.
What Is a Specific Goal?
A specific goal clearly defines what you want to accomplish.
When creating a specific goal, ask yourself:
- What am I trying to achieve?
- Who will I need to work with?
- When do I hope to achieve this?
- Why do I want to set this goal?
Instead of saying, "I want to grow my business," a specific goal might be, "I want to increase sales by expanding outreach to new customers in my service area."
Why Is It Important for Goals to Be Measurable?
Measurable goals help you track progress and determine whether you've succeeded.
Ask yourself:
- How will I know that I have met my goal?
- What are the signs of success?
- What represents success?
A measurable goal includes clear indicators, such as a percentage increase, a number of completed projects or a specific milestone.
How Do You Know if a Goal Is Achievable?
An achievable goal is realistic given your available resources, skills and timeframe.
Consider:
- How realistic is this goal within the time frame I've set?
- What skills or resources can contribute to achieving this goal?
Setting ambitious goals is important, but goals should remain attainable enough to maintain momentum and motivation.
What Makes a Goal Relevant?
A relevant goal supports broader priorities and aligns with current needs.
Ask:
- Why is this goal important right now?
- What area of my business or life does this goal relate to?
- How does it connect to actions already in place or actions that need to be established?
A relevant goal helps ensure your time and effort are focused on activities that create meaningful impact.
Why Should Goals Be Time-Bound?
Every goal needs a deadline. Time-bound goals create accountability and encourage consistent progress.
Ask yourself:
- What is the deadline?
- Why did I choose this date?
- Should I include progress check-ins along the way?
Establishing milestone dates can help you stay on track and make adjustments before the final deadline arrives.
How Do You Write a Complete SMART Goal?
After working through each SMART component, combine them into a single goal statement. The SMART Goals Worksheet recommends rewriting your goal to include all five elements.
Example:
"Increase average hay production by 10% during the next growing season by implementing a soil fertility plan, conducting soil tests, applying recommended nutrients and monitoring field performance monthly through harvest."
This goal is:
- Specific about improving hay production.
- Measurable through a 10% increase in yield.
- Achievable by using proven management practices.
- Relevant because increased forage production can improve farm productivity and profitability.
- Time-Bound with a deadline tied to the upcoming growing season.
What Are the Benefits of Using SMART Goals?
SMART Goals can help you:
- Clarify priorities.
- Focus efforts on meaningful outcomes.
- Measure progress objectively.
- Improve accountability.
- Identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for collaboration.
- Increase the likelihood of achieving desired results.
