Equipment WISE 2024 Delivers Safety and Skills Training with Farm Credit’s Support

Charitable Contributions Fund

In a field where safety is as critical as productivity, the Equipment WISE (Women Increasing Skills and Education) program is making a powerful impact, thanks in part to a grant from Farm Credit of the Virginias’ Charitable Contributions Fund. Held at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex in Chatham, Va., the 2024 Equipment WISE event brought together 46 women for a hands-on, empowering experience focused on farm equipment safety and operation.

Why It Matters

Agriculture remains one of the most dangerous industries in Virginia. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 574 agricultural fatalities occurred nationwide in 2018, with 19 in Virginia alone. Tractor-related incidents are a leading cause of these fatalities.
At the same time, the face of farming is changing. Between 2012 and 2017, the number of farms led by women in Virginia grew by 115%, highlighting the increasing role women play in shaping the future of agriculture. Equipment WISE is designed to support this shift by equipping women with the skills and confidence to safely operate farm machinery and lead their operations with safety top of mind.

A Hands-On Approach to Safety

Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Virginia State Dairymen’s Association partnered to offer a robust two-day Equipment WISE program in 2024. The event was made possible by a generous grant from Farm Credit of the Virginias’ Charitable Contributions Fund, local sponsorships and in-kind support, as well as strategic partnerships with Olde Dominion Ag Complex, the Virginia Tech Pesticide Programs, STABULL Livestock Equipment, Mid-Atlantic STIHL, Mecklenburg Electric (which led a session for the whole group on navigating downed power lines) and a number of equipment dealerships. Participants chose from a variety of sessions, including:
•    Tractor and skid steer operation
•    Truck and trailer maneuvering
•    Chainsaw safety
•    Fencing techniques
•    Fire safety
•    Load securing

Real Impact, Real Stories

One participant shared, “The instructors were so good, patient, and knowledgeable. I never felt dumb or that I didn't belong. Great way to learn and connect with other women.”

The program’s relevance was underscored by a recent incident in Virginia, where a downed power line struck a tractor. Thanks to the training received at Equipment WISE, the farmer knew to step back and call the power company immediately, potentially saving lives.
Following the training, 96% of participants said the program met or exceeded their expectations. Participants left with practical skills, increased confidence and a stronger sense of community.

Building a Safer, Stronger Future

Equipment WISE is more than a training—it’s a movement. By empowering women with the tools and knowledge to lead safely and effectively, the program is helping to build a more resilient and inclusive agricultural future.
